  • MARY AND HER MARVELOUS FLOWERS: The Queen of Collage

Bio about Mary Delany (1700-1788) member of the Blue Stocking Society, who at age 72 created the first ever ‘paper-mosaick’ flowers.

For the next ten years, she went on to produce a series of 985 extraordinary floral collages so detailed they look like photographs (which didn’t exist at the time).

Along the way, she made friends with botanists, royalty and explorers that collected plants from all over the world for Kew gardens, giving her unprecedented access to flowers to imitate and “collect” on paper to be shared, much like botanical drawings or dried, pressed flowers, but in 3D and vibrant color!

Her 10 volumes are housed in the collection of the British Museum.
