Valentines Day, 1990

Voyager is at the edge of observation
programmed to take one last look,
to see what's never been seen,
the planets and their moons,
silent sentries.
Rings in elliptical orbits.

The zeros and ones scroll.
It turns around and sends back
a final photo, the first family portrait
of our universe.

A paradigm shift
in perspective
You cannot look away
or help but marvel
at our fragile smallness,
our dependence on
atmospheric ratios.

Animal, vegetable, mineral.
We are atomic creatures,
miracles of explosive origins
The first fires still rolling away
in energetic waves to the
edge of existence.

The spacecraft Voyager 1 was launched in 1977. The images known as the Family Portrait Series were not part of the original plan, but an idea put forth by Carl Sagan, a member of the Voyager team. He suggested that once the spacecraft reached Neptune, they program it to turn around and point it at our solar system for a final photo, the first of its kind. Voyager is still operating and continues its trek away from us. The camera is no longer functional.
