Autumn Encounter
For the Elwha

The river is wild
now,
and it’s taking the shoreline,
the trees and rocks,
most everything
with it.
It’s rushing the sea
and swelling the shore,
it’s draining the land, erasing
the lakes.
It’s shaking its back
like a wet dog coming in
from the rain.
It’s tumbling to the Pacific,
a sweet and liquid
release.
A century of suffocation and
pent-up ambition storm down
the green-lined gorge,
its choking past, now history.
The river is free
The river is free.
