TIPS FOR WRITERS
TIPS FOR WRITERS
On my journey to becoming a better writer (and this is a lifelong practice!) I’ve picked up some useful information. I’d like to share it with you because I believe supporting each other is good for everyone: readers, agents, editors, publishers, libraries, bookstores and, of course, writers.
The two most important things you can do as an aspiring writer are to join SCBWI (Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators) and get thee to a critique group!
SCBWI has regional organizations which make it easier to attend classes, lectures and conferences. They will also help you find a critique group. Whether your critique is in-person or online (my preferred method because of scheduling) getting input on your work is critical. It will help you put your best foot forward when you’re finally ready to submit to an agent or editor. The support from fellow writers is also priceless.
And if you’re a WRITER, you’d better be a READER! Get your hands on all the recently published books in your genre and read. Be a critical reader. Look at sentence structure and word choices. Watch the plot’s rise and fall. Listen to the voice of the characters. Pay attention to what works and what doesn’t.
Also, patience is your friend. (This has been the hardest thing for me to learn!)
Some good advice from Winston Churchill, “Never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never...”
Best of luck (a.k.a. hard work and perseverance) to you!
Jenn
P.S. Winston would like to add that treats are important.
Lots and lots of treats.
